boxing - Buying a Leather Heavy Bag

Boxing: Mike Tyson vs Trevor Berbick

No person is the same. And the adage can be said in the sport of boxing. All boxers understand that the rule of the game is simple - punch your opponent until you knock him out, gives up, or the final bell sounded. But then, the way a boxer fights is what makes him different among the rest.

There are different types of boxers, depending on their strengths, their skill levels, and other correlated attributes. A boxer plays the game the way he does because of the fusion of all these features.

Different Boxing Styles

Brawler / Slugger

Brawlers are those who punch and punch with utter disregard for technique, relying heavily on their punching power to win. Most of them are slow and has poor footwork skills. They also tend to get hit a lot and most of the time, they catch a lot of shots on the way in.

While this can be a bad idea for a sound boxer, brawlers who can take tons of punches and deliver tons of damage in return sometimes win bouts. One powerful punch is all they need to win a fight.

George Foreman was a pure brawler and his durability along with his relentless style makes him one of the most feared brawlers when he was still active.

Classic boxer / Distance Fighter

The classic boxer, also known as the distance fighter, optimizes the distance between him and his opponent. A distance fighter prefers to pepper their opponents with long distance punches, most notably the jab, in an effort to keep them at bay and tire them throughout the fight. Another trait of the classic / distance fighter is that they also have better footwork than most of their opponents.

The jab and other long range punches do not carry huge amounts of power, which explains why most distance fighters win by points. However, a distance fighter knockout their opponents if they are able to tire them down the stretch.

Most notable proponent of this style is Muhammad Ali, whose quick feet and sharp jabs helped him become one of the legends of the sport. It is also important to note that Ali is no power puncher. Boxer-Punchers

Boxer-Puncher

Perhaps the type of boxer that requires a lot of skills in their armory, the boxer-puncher tend to wears their opponents down with powerful combinations and go for the knockout using a series of punches or even with just one shot. With deft footwork and blazing hand speed, they can slide in and do some damage and slip out before the other boxer can retaliate. Most traits of a boxer-puncher include speed, good chin, and extreme mobility.

Manny Pacquiao is a fine example of a boxer-puncher. He is naturally fast and agile and he also packs power in both hands.

Because leather is a natural product a bit of care is needed. Typically, a boxer will wipe down the bag after their practice session and someone that works for the gym will use leather cleaner once a week. As needed, a coat of leather conditioner will be added to make sure the leather stays supple and does not become brittle. While impressive to onlookers, most boxers would rather not have the leather shatter from a strong punch.

A heavy bag is essential to building stamina as well as coordination. Picking a proper size is important to make sure that the bag does not sway too much when the boxer punches it. If the bag is the wrong weight, it will be harder to punch because it is swaying too much. If it is too heavy, it can cause pain because it does not give enough for the size boxer.

He's great for learning all your techniques and shots with. You can even throw uppercuts to the chin and body. Many people buy a separate upper cut bag to practice these shots but with the Bob body opponent punching bag you wouldn't need one. So it really saves you money in the long run. I really like that.

Because he is so lifelike, you can actually target your punches towards specific parts of his body. You can't do that with a regular punching bag.

What I really like the most is the new design they have given Bob. He use to be just an upper torso punching dummy but now they have what they call a "Century Bob with groin". Along with the upper torso they have added the upper thighs and lower torso complete with boxer shorts.! Now the Bob body opponent punching bag really looks human!

The Most Fun Sport Games to Date

We all have played sports at one time or another in our lives, sport is fun, enjoyable, exciting and it gives you a great bout of a healthy body, mind and soul. But which ones are the best known sports games? Why do people love them so much? Let’s take a brief view at the most popular sports.

Football
Probably one of the best known sports in the world, countries come together whenever a football match is broadcast. Whether it’s the European Cup or the champion’s league final, football is a truly fun game to participate in and too watch.

Boxing
We have seen some great boxers come and go such as Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and many more. Seeing two humans put in a ring and fight is very entertaining, especially if they are of superb calibre. Performing boxing yourself may not be everyone’s preferred choice, but for most people jumping into the ring is a moment come true.

Golf
A game that almost anyone of any age can play. I remember visiting theme parks and playing crazy golf, the game can be very relaxing and very fun at the same time. It’s a bit of the negative of boxing, in golf you actually like to perform the game rather than watch it on the set, which can be a bit tedious. Let’s face it, it’s hardly as enthralling as watching extreme sports performers hurtling down the mountain side on their snowboards is it?

Rugby
Another sport that is quite similar to football, a lot of people tend to support various rugby clubs and are keen to see them play every week. The pedigree of this sport has exploded immensely over the last 12 months.

F1 Racing
This is still undecided as to whether it is a sport or not. When it comes down to it how much exercise can you get by driving a car or vehicle. There are a lot of people that do like watching F1, in my personal view I could not think of anything more tedious than sitting there and watching car zooming around. I would rather watch people going round the track on second hand bikes to be honest.

Free Standing Heavy Bag Buying Guide

The free standing heavy bag has become increasingly common as mixed martial arts have become popular. These bags offer a number of benefits over a hanging heavy bag. Even boxing studios have discovered these benefits and only the boxing purists scoff when they see this type of boxing bag at a boxing school.

One of the big benefits this type of bag has over the older hanging boxing bag is the additional striking surface area. For the mixed martial arts crowd, this is critical as punches are often combined with kicks and knee strikes. A free standing bag not only accommodates to but withstands those varying attacks better than most hanging bags do.

Even a double mounted hanging bag will sway quite a bit if kicked, which is the second advantage of the standing bag. For strength and durability, a free standing heavy bag weighs a lot more. On average, standing bags filled with water weigh in at about 275 pounds, but you can replace that water with stand for even more weight. This extra weight results in a more stable bag, which is ideal for punches and kicks.

To counteract the lack of movement, the padding on these bags is designed to cushion the blow quite a bit more than a hanging bag. The feel can still be altered though. For example, fill your bag with stand (as opposed to water) to get a more firm and substantial feel. Checkout your local gym if you are unsure what filler to use because they should have both bags filled with water and sand; use your visit to try out each bag to see which results in less movement.

Another benefit of a freestanding bag is the portability. The ability to move around a freestanding bag with ease is just one reason why fitness centers, schools, and boxing centers like using these bags; they can roll in and out. When there is not enough space for a permanent mount of a hanging bag, the standing bag becomes the obvious choice.

Another benefit is the cost; you might be surprised how affordable these bags are. Because the end user simply puts water or sand into the bag, the amount of materials needed to produce each unit is dramatically lower than most of the hanging bags. The amount of labor to build one is dramatically less as well. Most of the labor of a hanging boxing bag is in the sewing of the pieces together by hand. Because of the design of most standing bags, there is much less hand sewing need.

Finally, the purchaser of a standing bag also saves on shipping. Since these boxing bags are shipped without filling, you will find the shipping costs to be a lot lower than your typical heavy bags. Many of the heavy bags have shipping limits as to where they can be shipped. Many more destinations can be reached by a standing bag.

For most people, a free standing heavy bag is a good choice and a wise investment. Between the cost, space saving design and the fact that multiple styles can use them they become increasingly popular at not only sparring centers but even gyms.

Important Information You Should Know About a Heavy Bag

Many boxing fans decide to become more than just fans, they undergo their own training to become a real boxer, but most jump the gun and want to move right to a heavy bag. Some schools will let the student get their wish, but they are just doing so to avoid hassle. Using a boxing bag of any kind requires so requisite skill and is not for the complete novice. The wrong moves when attempting to punch a bag cannot only result in injury, but costly, painful, and permanent damages.

Most boxing schools have multiple boxing bags setup around their training area. Some are designed for circuit training to develop a boxer’s strength, coordination and speed. However, other schools only have different boxing bags to accommodate to different wants and needs.

The average male requires a heavy bag that weighs about sixty five pounds. At the very least, a training school or fitness center will have two different weighted bags; they are usually 40 pounds and 150 pounds and a boxer will use them based on their own height and weight. Although a beginner needs to start out slow and steady, an experienced boxer can opt for a bag close to their weight.

The experienced boxer has spent a lot of time developing the strength, stamina and technique needed to be ready for the heavier bag. When using a suspended hanging bag, the goal is to move the bag only a little bit. This helps the boxer develop coordination so they can more easily hit a moving target. The perfect weight is important, because a light bag can cause too much swaying.

At a training school, the trainer will pair their boxer with the best sized bag. After evaluation, they may need to move the boxer to a different bag. Not only is a bag that is swaying around a lot an ineffective practice tool, it can be dangerous to a new boxer. You might be surprised how many beginners have walked away with broken noses.

It can be difficult to buy a heavy bag for home-use. The recommendations may yield a bag that ends up too light later on but is too heavy when the aspiring boxer begins using it. Fitness gyms and training centers can afford to buy a wide range of different sized heavy bags, but a home-user is unlikely to afford multiple purchases.

For the best results and a safe choice, pick a bag that starts out a little bit on the heavier side. With a strong commitment and continued training, your skill level will grow tremendously in just the first few months; you will then welcome the added weight. If you are not able to use a boxing trainer, it is important to start out slow and steady; use this slow and steady pace to prevent injury or evaluate it as it happens.

Using a heavy bag is an exciting experience. You will be proud the first time you strike the bag hard enough to move it and your pride will increase with repeated punches and movement. Purchasing one’s own boxing bag is also a satisfying experience as is the first punch swung after hanging it in a workout studio or garage.

Why You Should Purchase a TKO Heavy Bag

TKO is one of the most well-known and most recognized brands of boxing equipment. The TKO heavy bag is no exception, offering a superior quality product at a competitive price. These hanging boxing bags are offered in different weights and are available constructed of different materials. If you want a good boxing workout, a quality boxing bag is vital to your success.

TKO has been making boxing bags for many years and has been an innovator from the beginning. They were the first to offer a high quality vinyl heavy bag. What this bag gives you is the feel of leather without the added costs or maintenance. It rivals the durability and will stand up to harsher conditions, such as an hot and humid workout center that lacks air conditioning.

For even more extreme conditions, TKO makes a heavy bag that is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. This well-built bag has a waterproofed outer layer. This means the bag can be used outside for years to come; you don’t need to worry about it getting wet or damaged. If you like to train at home, but don’t have the space needed for a hanging bag inside, outdoor use is important for you.

For commercial purposes as well as purists, TKO does offer canvas and leather bags as well. When you train on these bags, you usually have a specific purpose. With a canvas bag, boxers are encouraged to hit the middle of the bag because grazing your hand on the side of the bag (even with gloves) can hurt. Leather is not only ideal for boxing, but practice for street fighting and martial arts; these are sports in which gloves are rarely used.

TKO heavy bags are always available in different weights. Coming in at around 40 pounds, lighter bags are ideal for smaller adults and younger children. For adults, a 65 pound bag and up will do the trick; it is perfect for training or even just a little bit of exercise.

TKO uses a variety of fillings in their boxing bags to compensate for the preferences of their customers. Most bags are soft and filled with dense fibers; these absorb most of the impact. Other bags available include bags filled with sand, the most dense available bags, as well as hydrobags. These bags from TKO are designed to be filled with water and withstand years of abuse without leaking.

What materials your TKO heavy bag comes with, should be based on preference. Sand filled bags are the classic but can feel more like punching a brick wall than sand at times. Due to their ability to absorb most of the impact and their affordable shipping costs, water filled bags have rapidly increased in popularity over the years; you may want to try one.

TKO is not only well-known for their boxing bags, but all boxing equipment. TKO heavy bags and all other equipment is known for its strength and durability. With a wide range of choices (fillings and weights), find the TKO bag perfect for you.

Watch Your Health Closely While Making Weight - Boxing Classes

Boxing practice - The Mighty Boosh - BBC comedy

Each father at some time or other during the "growing" years of his sons sees fit to instruct his protégés in the art of self-defense or amateur boxing.

One of the most important things a dad can teach his son is "how to make a proper fist," in order to avoid future hand injuries. We all know how a painful thumb or finger injury results when a baseball or football strikes the wrong part of the hand.

The same is true if the thumb of your boy's fist is not properly folded, or if on landing a blow the force is centered on protruding knuckles. When the blow is properly landed the knuckles of the fist should be straight across (no protruding knuckles), thereby allowing the whole fist to absorb the force of the blow. The result gives the boy more power to his blow and minimizes chances of injury to his hands.

I suggest that as the next step you (the father) hold your left hand, palm open and inward, and hit your palm with a closed right fist. In going through this procedure, check to see if the right thumb is properly curled over, and if the fist on contact is landing on all four knuckles, rather than on one or two protruding knuckles. This will ensure that you have a more solid understanding of amateur boxing yourself.

Dehydration Techniques should be abandoned immediately. Purposefully draining your body of precious electrolytes right before a fight, for any reason, is down right dumb. The use of rubber suits, Albolene and other dangerously creative ways to drop weight rapidly are simply playing with fire. Not only do the suits prevent the body from breathing, but Albolene actually makes the skin softer and prone to injury in the ring.

It is surprising how many boys grow to college age without even having been taught how to hit properly. Hence if the father gets no point across to his son other than the proper care of his hands, he has done a good job. A boy who is taught the proper fundamentals at an early age has a distinct advantage over others.

If he chooses to box in high school, college, or in amateur boxing, he has a head start on the beginner. The coach will not have to break any unorthodox or bad boxing habits he has acquired by himself.

Evander Holyfield moved up from cruiserweight to heavyweight by employing a regimented program of weights and nutrition, to gain 30 pounds of muscle mass in only six months. He had less than 3 per cent body fat and was a well-muscled heavyweight champion.

Circle the opposite way of the way that comes most naturally to you. To develop change-up ability, endurance and coordination, mix in combination's and throw jabs
